First off, I want to congratulate Elizabeth Korte and Chris Van Etten on being nominated for the Daytime Drama Award of the 2025 Writers Guild Awards. General Hospital has been on fire lately, with no slowing down in sight. The year of 2024 was high and low in regard to the writing team. Chris and Dan were let go in favor of Elizabeth and Patrick. Then Patrick was let go with Korte being solo HW. Finally, Van Etten and Korte were permanently named as co-Head Writers. The writing and pacing of the show have been fantastic all year. While there are a lot of haters and trolls on social media, they don't represent the majority of viewers who are enjoying the show.
With that said, I would love to see some type of crossover happen. We have seen soap opera writers go on to become wrestling writers. Jennifer Pepperman is a good example. She worked on One Life to Live during both the end of the ABC tenure and during the Prospect Park tenure. She then transitioned over to working for WWE, now she is working for AEW. But could it work the other way? Maybe I am wrong, but I have not heard of any writers that worked in wrestling, then went on to work for any soap. Personally, I would like to see one specific person take a shot working for a soap, and that person is...Paul Heyman!
Not only was Heyman the mad scientist behind ECW, but he was also one of the Head Writers of WWE SmackDown! during the early 2000's when the show was garnering higher ratings than Monday Night Raw. His writing was deep, and he used different members of the roster than were used previously. Guys like Edge, Eddie Guerrero, Rey Mysterio, Chris Benoit, and Kurt Angle were catapulted to Main Event status and became household names. Ohh yeah, he has also had creative input in the Bloodline storyline that has brought wrestling into a renaissance period.
During a recent interview on Logan Paul's Impaulsive podcast, Heyman revealed that he would love to write a feature film. Well, what about a soap opera? I would love to see Heyman's creative input on General Hospital. Or maybe even The Bay, especially because I call it the ECW of soap operas. We would end up seeing much edgier programming that soap fans are used to. Could Korte and Van Etten benefit from a "contrarian" point of view? Could Gregori Martin work with the creative genius that is Heyman? We may never see it, but I would be all for it!
